IntroductionTo start Farming (Members Only skill) you will need to find a Farming patch. There are different types of patches around the world where you can grow different resources. Their locations and details are explained later on. When you arrive at a patch for the first time it will be overgrown with weeds. You will need to use a rake on the patch to remove the weeds. Then you'll treat the soil with compost (from farmer or you can make your own). Then use a seed on the farming patch, while having a seed dibber in your inventory, to plant it. Use a watering can on the new plant so it will start growing (not needed if you pay a nearby farmer to take care of your plants). But do note that your plants can get diseased and die if left alone. If your plant gets diseased you will have to use a plant cure potion on the plant (Flowers can also protect your crops). This can be bought from any farmer that lingers close to most farming patches for 25gp. You can also buy these Plant Cure Potions at Farming Shops, but for 40gp. If you don't use the Plant Cure Potion on your plant in time it will die and you'll have to clear out your patch by using a spade on the dead plant. Note that Lunar Magick offers a level 66 spell to cure disease and a level 83 spell to treat a patch with supercompost. When you are harvesting some patches you will need a spade as well. You can treat patches with compost to avoid disease and increase harvest yield when you pick the grown plant. The below equipment is suggested:
The locations of each type of patch, a minimap, what you can plant, how long they will take and how much xp you receive are shown below. Take full advantage of alternative travelling methods described in the Getting Around guide. This Runescape farming map might also be useful.
Return to TopFarming tools and shopsBefore you can start Farming you will need to get some farming tools. These can all be bought in the Farming Shops located close to all allotment patches. They are relatively inexpensive at around a few gp each. Some of them can also be found at various respawning points, such as the shed in Lumbridge swamps. Here is a list of all the farming tools:
* Secateurs can be blessed during the quest A Fairy Tale Part I - Growing Pains. Magic Secateurs increase crop yields by around 10% if wielded when harvesting and they can be stored with your leprechaun. Farming shops are where you can purchase the necessary tools such as sacks, compost, pots and all farming tools. Their locations are detailed below. All farming shops are shown like this on the Runescape map:
The Leprechaun's Tool Shed
Return to TopSeedsYou can collect seeds by thieving from Master Farmers or from the Seed stalls. The Seed stalls do not yield herb seeds, while the Master Farmers do. Some monsters drop seeds. You can purchase seeds from other players. You can also buy various seed packets with reward points from the Pest Control mini game. Additionally, picking cabbage will give you occasional cabbage seeds, picking potatoes will give you potato seeds, etc. You can get tree seeds from a bird's nest. Bird's nests are randomly dropped from trees while you are woodcutting. A bird's nest will drop behind your character and you will have to pick it up. Alternatively, bird's nests can be obtained as rewards from various minigames, especially the Miscellania Kingdom. If you search a bird's nest, there is a chance you will find a tree seed, a ring, a fruit tree seed or a bird egg. For those more of a Combat type, you may want to consider the Giant Mole. Killing the Giant Mole will give you mole skin and claws, which you can trade to Wyson the Gardener in Falador park in exchange for 1 bird's nest per mole item you turn in. Consult the Bestiary data for the Giant Mole for more details.
Return to TopCompostPatches that have been treated with Compost are less likely to become diseased and will yield a better harvest. Supercompost magnifies both qualities. You can buy compost at farming stores, but not supercompost. To make your own compost or supercompost, you have to fill up your own compost bin with organic material. These compost bins are located at every allotment patch. You will have to put 15 items in to fill the bin. Then close the bin and wait for 40-50 minutes until it's rotten. When it lets you re-open the bin you can get 15 buckets of compost out of it by using a bucket with the bin. If you have enough compost for all your buckets in your inventory, a single click on a compost bin will fill all of your buckets. Use an item on the local farmer to find out what type of compost it will make. Weeds are easy to use (for regular compost) because all weeds in your inventory are deposited at once (any other items must be used on the bin one at a time.)
Return to TopAllotments, Flowers & HerbsTo plant allotment seeds you will need to go to an Allotment patch. At allotment patches there is always a Compost bin, one Herb patch and one Flower patch. Locations are detailed below. You must have 3 allotment seeds to plant an allotment patch.
*The Tools leprechaun here also sells farming supplies, although the supply is best used for patches elsewhere. Here is a list of what you can plant at Allotment patches, together with some information on how much xp you will receive, and their healing values.
You can either take care of the plants yourself, as explained in the Intro or you can let the farmer close to that patch take care of them. However this is going to cost you something, not money but another farming product. Here is the list of farming products you have to pay to let the farmer watch your crops (farmers accept noted payments.)
Flowers are located in the middle of all allotment patches. Some are meant to protect your crops from getting diseases, others are meant for herblore. You can check the Allotment section of this guide to see the exact locations of the flower patches (they have been marked yellow). You always plant flowers one at a time (one seed), and you always harvest a set amount. This means you will always harvest 1 nasturtium, 1 marigold, 1 rosemary, 3 limpwurt roots and 3 woad leafs (note you only get the exp as shown in the table and not 3 times that exp).
Some flowers are used to protect your Allotment by attracting away insects; here is a table which shows what protects certain crops.
Herb patches are found in the same location as Allotments and Flower patches. Check the Allotment section of this guide to see the exact locations of herb patches (marked red). Herbs cannot be protected in any way or be looked after by the farmer, so you will have to do it all by yourself. If they get diseased you have to use a plant cure potion on them. If they die, use a spade to dig up the patch. Herb patches do not need to be watered. All herbs obtained from these patches will yield grimy herbs so you would also need the appropriate herblore level to clean them before you can use it, but you can still trade it to other players if you cannot clean them. Here is a list of all the herbs, the levels, and the xp you get from them.
Return to TopScarecrowsScarecrows are used to protect sweetcorn from getting eaten by birds (which is a disease). You have to build a scarecrow first (this earns 25 xp) and then put it on a flower patch. When you are finished with it, it can be dug up and banked for future use. Here are some instructions on how to make scarecrows and where you can find what you need.
Return to TopHopsHops patches are not in the same locations as allotment, flower and herb patches. You will need 4 seeds to plant a hops field. Jute is an exception, it only requires 3 seeds. Hops products (except for jute) are used for Brewing ales. Here is the list of all locations of the hops fields.
Here is a list what you can grow at hops fields, together with xp and growing times.

Return to TopTreesYou will need to have a trowel to plant the tree seed in a plant pot. You can buy these from the farming store, or you can use an empty plant pot on any gardening patch to fill it with dirt. Water the pot, and very soon it will grow into a sapling. You will need a spade to plant the sapling in a tree patch. Tree patches do not need to be watered. If a tree gets a disease you will have to use your secateurs on the diseased tree. After you have checked the health of your tree you can chop it down. Once it is gone you will see the tree stump like you normally do when woodcutting, but now you can use a spade on it to clear your patch for a new tree. You will receive tree roots, which are used for several things. Oak roots are used for brewing a woodcutting boosting ale, Axeman's Folly. Yew roots are used to make an herblore potion, Antidote+. Magic roots can be used on a spinning wheel to make an Amulet of Nature, or used to make an Antidote++ potion. Roots below magic can be spun into crossbow strings, or used on a compost bin to make supercompost. Alternatively, you could pay a gardener 200gp and (s)he will clear the patch and supercompost it for you, but you won't get the tree roots this way. The gardeners will only chop down maple, yew or magic trees; you must chop your own oaks and willows. Here are the five tree patch locations:
Here is a list of all trees, xps and times. Note that the listed times are provided by Jagex - if your tree becomes diseased while under the care of a farmer, it will take longer to grow.
*You can use secateurs on grown willow trees to get willow branches. This gives you no farming experience, but the branches can be used to make baskets. You can either take care of the plants yourself as explained in the intro, or you can let the farmer that is close to the patch take care of your plants. However this is going to cost you something: not money, but another farming product. Here is the list of farming products you have to pay to let the farmer watch your crops (farmers accept noted payments.)
Return to TopFruit treesFruit trees are planted on special fruit tree patches; there are four. The same planting procedure for regular trees applies to fruit trees. Here is a list of the four fruit tree patch locations.
Here is a list of all fruit trees, xps and growing times. Each tree will produce 6 fruits. If you pick them and leave the tree, it will produce more. Note that the listed times are provided by Jagex - if your tree becomes diseased while under the care of a farmer, it will take longer to grow.

Return to TopBushesBushes can only be planted at bush patches. Bush patches never need to be watered, but can still get diseased. Here is a list of the four bush patch locations.
