Introduction

Wow, don't you look nice. That hat is simply amazing, and the pants you picked to go with it coordinate so well! I hate to break it to you though, your outfit seems to be missing something... Let's see, you have a hat, a top, a bottom, some gloves and jewellery... What could be missing? Ah ha! A cape. If you pick the right one, you will round the entire outfit out, and make it look spectacular! Not only that, but some capes will show that you've achieved something that many others can't, or they can protect you when push comes to shove.

Regular Cape

Let's start here: the standard cape. This may actually be one of the first items you get due to the pesky highwaymen that roam the path intersections between Lumbridge and Falador and attack any adventurer that walks into their path. This is a Free to Play (F2P) cape.

Coloured Capes

You could just hang on to your black cape, and while it is true that black goes with everything, you should try some different colours. It's actually really simple to get different coloured capes. All you need is a cape and some dye. Use the dye on a cape, and you have a brand new cape! No dye you say? Go see Aggie in Draynor Village. She will give you a small bottle of dye for the ingredients and a small fee. The coloured capes have the same stats as the regular black cape.

If you have a coloured cape, and want a black one again, members can make black mushroom ink and use it on the coloured cape. Members can also go to the dyer in the Northeast corner of Pollnivneach, or purchase ready-made dyes from the shop in Lletya. Note that capes shown in gray shaded rows (in tables below) are members only, and cannot be made or traded on F2P worlds.

Fremennik Capes

Maybe you'd prefer a cape made for the cold climates of Runescape. If you have completed the Fremennik Trials quest, you can buy these capes from Yrsa, the clothes shopkeeper in the Rellekka province. They provide the same amount of protection as a regular cape, but they come in a larger variety of colours for a measly 325 gp. These capes can be worn by players who have not completed the quest by purchasing them from a successful quester.

God Capes and Cloaks

If you enjoy the magic skill, and like the idea of calling the power of the Saradomin, Guthix, or Zamorak upon your enemy, a "god" cape is a great idea. If you have over 60 magic, go to the Mage Arena in the high level members wilderness. If you are able to finish the mini game, you will be given the choice of a god staff and a god cape. To get the cape, go to the bank where you started the mini game and jump into the pool. If you don't have one of the god capes, or have lost your cape, just choose the statue of the god you want, and pray at it. A cape will appear at your feet. When you wear this cape, you will get a hefty magic attack bonus, and you will be able to cast the "god" spell that matches the cape a whole lot better. You can only have one god cape at a time (drop yours and pray at the statue to get another). These capes cannot be traded to other players. Saradomin is the blue cape, Zamorak is the red cape, and Guthix is the Green cape.

They are white and bear the coloured symbol of their respective patron RS god. The Guthix cloak has a green squiggly lightning bolt, Saradomin has a blue plus sign and Zamorak has a red upside-down letter "w".

Castle Wars Cloaks

You may want to show off the fact that you are an avid Castle Wars player. Collect 10 tickets and you can buy one of the cloaks that you wear during the game. This time though, you can keep it forever. It is an untradeable members item, so make sure you get yours when you are still a member. In case you somehow don't know, red is Zamorak and blue is Saradomin.

Legends Cape

The next cape tells everyone that you are known throughout Runescape as a top adventurer, defender of good, and willing to help out the meek. If you have completed the grueling Legends quest, you will be able to buy this for 675 gp from the shopkeeper on the top floor of the Legends Guild. With its tattered bottom and shocking white colour, everyone will know that you have finished the quest. Of course it goes with everything, but be advised - this exclusive cape cannot be traded.

TzHaar Capes

So you don't like helping NPCs in Runescape? Would you rather beat something into the dirt using any means necessary? The next two capes show that not only do you like fighting, but you have dedicated yourself to the many methods of fighting. In the TzHaar caves, you will have to strategically switch combat styles and defence styles to kill the monsters or people the quickest way possible while avoiding death at all times. Both are great accomplishments. It takes many hours to collect enough Tok'kul (TzHaar money) to buy the obsidian cape (which can be traded). It takes a few hours of straight combat to kill the monster that holds the animated fire cape (which cannot be traded).

Capes of Achievement

To many people, the most impressive capes are the capes of achievement. They feel that getting 99 in any skill is pretty much impossible, and to be honest, it is pretty close to it. If you're a member and you have achieved this incredible goal, you can buy an achievement cape for a small fee. If you have 99 in more than one skill, you will get a special trimmed cape for your efforts.

If you don't have the patience to get 99 in a skill, you still have a chance to get an achievement cape. Just complete every quest. After that, you can buy and wear your new cape until the next quest comes out. Obviously, Capes of Achievement cannot be traded. For more information on the various Capes of Achievement and where to get them, refer to our Achievement Capes guide.

Wilderness Capes

Less showing off and more function? That is very easy to do. Just get yourself a wilderness team cape. These handy capes will help you out if you are in the wilderness with a group of friends, and all of you are fed up with attacking each other. If they are not on your friends list, and you all wear the same team cape, they will appear as a blue dot on your mini map, making them much easier to locate. The people on your friends list will still appear green on the map. Another effect of two people wearing a team cape is that it is harder to attack them. If you right click someone with the same cape, you will notice that the "Attack" button has been moved down. This is to make it easier to fight in a group.

Naturally, since these are called wilderness capes, you can only get them in the wilderness. There are 10 salesmen that wander the wilderness selling their capes. Each of them has a spot that they are near, but may stray further. So, if you have 50 gp and are brave enough to venture into the wilderness, you can get these capes, or buy them from another player. Sadly, these capes only function in members, so if you have a free world clan PK, this isn't the thing for you.

Instead of functional, how about just fun? This cloak, when combined with the rest of the suit, makes you transparent like a ghost! After completing the mini quest, you get the entire set. Refer to our Ghostly Robes guide for more information on how to obtain ghostly clothing. Be careful, this cape is untradeable, so if you die with it, you have to repeat the miniquest again.

These capes are two of the most helpful capes in the game. If you have the required hunter level (40 for spotted, 66 for spottier) you can wear these capes. H.A.M. Cloak

This cape doesn't seem useful at first, though does look rather spiffy. You need this cloak to complete the set of H.A.M. clothing, which is needed to do the Death to the Dorgeshuun quest, so it may be worth your while to pick one up. Wearing a complete set of H.A.M. clothing also improves your chances of successfully raising your thieving skill by pickpocketing H.A.M. characters. Ironically, you can get this cloak by pickpocketing those very same H.A.M. members in H.A.M. Headquarters, or buy it from another player.

Animal Magnetism

The Animal Magnetism quest rewards players with an Attractor or Accumulator. When worn in the cape slot, it picks up around 75% of your dropped arrows and deposits them into your arrow slot or pack. Any obstacle between you and the arrows will block this ability. The device also creates metal items (usually arrows, but also ores, bars and various others) from thin air. Walking around gets more arrows than standing still. The Attractor creates iron items and requires range skill level 30; the Accumulator creates steel items and requires range level 50. These devices also give a range bonus!

Note: These devices will only function on members' worlds
